The Tbilisi Funicular (Georgian: თბილისის ფუნიკულიორი, Tbilisis Funikuliori) is one of Tbilisi’s most iconic and historic attractions, providing a scenic and convenient way to ascend to the top of Mtatsminda Mountain. It is a mountain-cable railway that connects the central city to the Mtatsminda Plateau, which is home to a large amusement park and a restaurant complex with panoramic views. The funicular itself is an integral part of the city’s history and a must-do for both locals and tourists.

History and Engineering:

  • Early 20th-Century Innovation: The funicular was built at the initiative of Belgian engineers in the early 1900s to solve the problem of connecting “Lower Tbilisi” with the planned development of a new district on the Mtatsminda plateau. Construction began in 1903, and it officially opened on March 27, 1905.

  • A Journey into the Past: Legend has it that in the early days, people were so afraid to ride the funicular that they had to be paid to get into the carriage. Today, the ride is a seamless journey, and the funicular has been a beloved symbol of the city for over a century.

  • Modern Upgrades: The funicular has undergone several reconstructions over the years, with the most recent major renovation completed in 2012. It now features modern carriages that can accommodate up to 60 people, making the 3-minute ride a comfortable and smooth experience.

  • The Ride and Stations: The funicular has three stations:

    • Lower Station: The starting point, located on Chonkadze Street, in a beautiful, renovated building.

    • Middle Station: A stop where you can exit to visit the St. David’s Church (Mamadaviti) and the Mtatsminda Pantheon of Writers and Public Figures, a necropolis where many of Georgia’s most prominent artists and thinkers are buried.

    • Upper Station: The final destination at the peak of Mtatsminda Mountain, which provides access to Mtatsminda Park.

Mtatsminda Park and the Summit:

  • Mtatsminda Park: At the top of the mountain, you will find the expansive Mtatsminda Park, one of the most popular recreational areas in the city. Known locally as “Bombora,” it offers a wide range of family-friendly activities, including amusement rides, cafes, a dinosaur park, and the famous Ferris wheel, which provides breathtaking, 360-degree views of Tbilisi.

  • Funicular Restaurant Complex: The upper station building houses the Funicular Restaurant Complex, an upscale dining establishment known for its traditional Georgian cuisine and arguably the most spectacular views in the city. Dining here, especially at sunset or at night, is a highly recommended experience.

  • Tbilisi TV Tower: The summit is also home to the Tbilisi TV Tower, which dominates the city skyline and is beautifully illuminated at night.

Visitor Information:

  • Location (Lower Station): The main station is at 22 Chonkadze Street, located in the Mtatsminda district. It is a walkable distance from Freedom Square or Rustaveli Avenue, or easily reachable by taxi or public transport.

  • Opening Hours: The funicular operates daily from approximately 9:00 AM to 11:30 PM, though some sources state it runs as late as 4:00 AM. It’s always best to verify the current operating hours.

  • Tickets and Payment: To ride the funicular, you must purchase a plastic “Travel Card” (for a small fee of 2 GEL) and load it with credit. The cost of a one-way ride is around 8-10 GEL. The same card can be used for attractions within the park.

The Tbilisi Funicular offers a perfect combination of historical charm, modern convenience, and stunning natural beauty, making it an essential experience for any visitor to the Georgian capital.
